happy canada day weekend!

We had a lovely start to our Canada Day weekend, with plans to do some last-minute errands and then head off to a backyard fundraiser with our wonderful group of friends, I wanted something comfortable enough to spend the whole day in.

We made a quick stop at this market in Bridgeland, it was the cutest place, definitely stop in if you’re in the area. I love the white picket fences and streets lined with trees in this neighbourhood, they always have me dreaming!

I decided to mix some comfy boyfriend jeans and a tailored white button-up to keep my look balanced! I knew I wanted to sneak in a bit of red to honor our country’s birth date this weekend, but still have a neutral girly look so I stuck with red lipstick and added a pastel pink infinity scarf. For accessories I paired this adorable pink and gold bow bracelet with a white embossed clutch. I love flats, especially flats with bows! These were a perfect neutral for the outfit.

kitchen favourites & design inspiration!

I decided that I would post my favourite home items space by space. Next up I’ll go over the kitchen items I love! It can be tough to come up with fresh ideas and find the perfect items that really fit your space so I’ll include where I get my inspiration from!

I have to say I don’t spend much time in the kitchen, (I definitely need more than a little help in this area.. whoops!) but of course I still wanted this space to feel finished. I really wanted to continue with the same fresh feel and colour palette throughout the main floor so I looked for silver, white, and blue décor then incorporated some rustic elements to keep it cozy. Also if you read my previous post with my living room favourites (find it here), I mentioned my obsession with chalkboards which are in heavy effect in the kitchen. Hello labeling and organization!! I love the large chalkboard for shopping lists, notes to the fiancé or quotes I love for inspiration. Scale was something I struggled with in this room, it has high ceilings so finding large items that made the space feel complete yet simple was difficult, but it’s coming together! I try to stay inspired to try different ideas in our home but with a busy life it can be hard, here’s where I find it..

Obviously Pinterest has become a huge source of inspiration for ideas, but I thought I’d share the other ways I have found inspiration in the past because I have to say sometimes I see images of beautiful homes and I just want to give up and move! It can be so daunting to see perfect spaces and features in homes that are unattainable in your own. I learnt early on when we moved into our home that sometimes you have to decorate the space you have, not the one you wish you had. So make the most of your homes’ unique features by highlighting them and looking for ideas really anywhere! See below for some of my sources:

Show Homes – I actually love browsing the design and décor to gain ideas, plus if your lucky like us and had bought recently, each neighbourhood has your house design decorated differently. Its pretty much a no brainer!

Favourite Stores – This is a great way to get ideas because they have amazing styling that already fits your taste. Pottery Barn would be my absolute dream home!

Hotels – Have you ever noticed most hotels have amazing styling? Plus the design can be very unique depending on the feel they are going for.

Antiquing – Some of my first inspirational memories of interior decorating was hitting garage sales with my mom and finding pieces that had a story behind them. She is so talented and looking back I’m so happy she influenced me with her love of antiques and mixing rustic décor into a modern space! I’m still searching for really great pieces and will keep you posted!

Television – Who remembers watching Trading Spaces and Debbie Travis’ Painted House?! Those were the days! I was utterly obsessed and always dreamed of the day I would get the chance to decorate my own home. Since then I’ve picked up some new shows but I love them all the same!

Love It or List It with Hilary Farr: I love the elegance she incorporates into her spaces
Love It or List It Vancouver with Jillian Harris: I love that she mixes in antique pieces with girly décor!
Colour Confidential with Jane Lockhart: this show taught me all about contrasting and complimenting colours, it totally opened me up to the possibilities when it comes to colour
Martha Stewart Living: the queen of the home and diy projects, I love everything she does!
Divine Design with Candice Olson: she mixes so many elements into a space that all go together seamlessly

Check out these wonderful ladies for some inspiration for your own home!

Chalkboard: Restoration Hardware – I love this one, but I found mine at Homesense
Canisters: Target, Williams Sonoma, One Kings Lane – Mine came with built in chalkboards from Pier One Imports, Homesense, and Michaels (you can find chalkboard labels by Martha Stewart at Staples!)
Candle Holders: Ikea
Striped Kitchen Mat: Williams Sonoma
Mason Jar Measuring Cup: Indigo
Vase & Lemon Filler: Target
Topiary: Target
Wall Clock: Sweetpea and Willow – I found mine at Homesense
Mail Container: Cotton On – I found mine at Superstore but luckily it can still be found online
Cutting Board: Homesense
Vase: Target
Twig Vase Filler: Ikea

summer neutrals

It is officially summer here and we ended up having beautiful weather this past weekend!! So when the fiance and father-in-law finished working on the deck early, we decided to go enjoy some fun activities outdoors! My style is usually pretty casual and easy-going which works perfectly for those summer days spent wandering around. Following lunch on a patio (of course!) we headed into downtown Calgary.

I paired this blue and white striped linen blouse I had, which was an awesome Winners find, with a pair of white, cotton shorts. This look felt so fresh and summery I never wanted to change! I can’t get enough of cognac coloured accessories so I added a Nine West handbag and sandals in the shade to add some contrast to the outfit. I absolutely adore anything with hearts and just like my home décor, I love silver and gold accessories! PS. Sorry for the blurry shot – we are still figuring out this whole blogging photography thing ;)

friday favourites: drugstore finds

If your like me, then you love ALL beauty products, a makeup junkie if you will. Growing up my mom, aunt and I would spend hours at the local Shoppers Drug Mart looking for new products to try. I decided since I already shared one half of my beauty routine it was only fair to share the other!

Here are a few of my must-have finds (excluding Neutrogena, which I love but I have only found in the States – if you get the chance take a look at their cosmetics, they are amazing!). Some of these are actually great alternatives to more expensive brand name products that I’ve tried so it really goes to show that its not all about the price tag. For example, mascara is something that I have tried a lot and I repeat A LOT of, but for the amount I use on a daily basis I can’t justify spending $50 dollars on it, especially when I can get the same result for $7! Take a peek at my suggestions below.

1. Revlon Eyelash Curler
people always think my eyelashes are fake, the answer? everyone, I repeat everyone should have an eyelash curler in their bag! your eyes will never look better and this curler never breaks my lashes
2. Physician’s Formula Pressed Bronzer
great for contouring and has little to no shimmer which can sometimes make your skin look muddy
3. Tweezerman Tweezers
the best tweezers out there and it doesn’t hurt that they come in pink either!
4. Maybelline Great Lash Mascara, L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara
I usually always have two mascaras on the go! one as a base for length and one to build volume + great lash works well for the lower lashes (also check out Maybelline Falsies Mascara) I buy all of my mascaras in the curved brushes to add extra lift!
5. EOS Lip Balm
I can’t live without my eos lip balm! cute packaging never hurts and the balm does wonders
6. CoverGirl Cheekers Blush in Rose Silk
this has a natural looking peach-pink colour and adds a great sheen, almost like a built-in highlight!
7. CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain in Everbloom Kiss, Revlon Lipstick in Pink Cloud
this is an absolute must have in my makeup routine, adds a natural looking tint to lips and doubles as a lip liner for definition layered under lipstick or gloss + this sweet pink lipstick has just enough shimmer to give lips a plumper appearance and a pretty pink wash of colour
8. Almay Clear Complexion Foundation
I swear by this foundation, I have sensitive skin and this has been the only foundation that consistently keeps me breakout free, it contains a low percentage of salicylic acid to keep blemishes at bay
9. Revlon Photoready Skinlights Illuminator
I use this for any special occasion or when I want that extra oomph to my look! I mix it into my foundation and apply all over for a flawless look
10. Covergirl Eye Shadows
if your looking for a cheaper alternative for shadows these are great, they have good pigment and lasting ability compared to other drugstore shadows I’ve tried

maxi skirts

I have been seeing maxi skirts everywhere right now so it inspired me to pull out a Talula one I had from last season. We had been out in Strathmore, Alberta for a family golf tournament over the weekend and were heading out for Father’s Day festivities later that Sunday so I wanted something casual but cute! We stopped to smell the flowers… literally! I loved these lilac bushes that were all over the golf course, they smell so amazing!

Barefoot and happy! The morning ended up being beautiful so I wore the skirt with a Talula bustier. I’m obsessed with anything and everything pastel right now so I picked a pale blue colour. I love how this skirt flows, it feels so airy and I love it paired with the slimmer fit of the bustier. I also threw on my fedora to add a little flair, plus they come in handy for those post camping hair styles ;)

We went out later on for brunch with my dad and since we were in the area, we wandered around the neighborhood I grew up in. Its an older community in Calgary with pre-war houses, they have so much character and I fall in love every time. Plus I’m a sucker for a street lined with big, beautiful trees and flowers. Anyway, it was a little chilly out so I added a chambray button up, which is a great staple!

living room favourites & design tips!

I’m so excited to share some of my favorite home items and tips with you! Tyler and I moved into our new home about 2 and a half years ago now and it has been so fun decorating each space. Our style has evolved and the rooms have evolved with it which can be exciting, confusing, frustrating and rewarding all at the same time. Hopefully I can help someone make the process a little easier!

Shopping for décor is a favourite pastime of mine, I could spend hours searching. In case you didn’t notice I’m a huge fan of Indigo, they always have great unique and stylish items that I can’t find anywhere else. I also couldn’t live without Homesense, I can always count on them for great finds and deals! Also on my go-to list? Target, Ikea, Superstore, Crate and Barrel, Walmart, Pottery Barn, Pier One Imports, Michaels and really anywhere I can find what I’m looking for!

My advice is to buy pieces that you love and figure out where to put them later on! I feel like your less likely to tire of your design if it speaks to you personally. That being said having a continuous theme is something I would suggest, especially when it comes to your main rooms like your kitchen and living room. I love to create a calming and relaxing feel in these rooms as this is usually the space where you spend most of your time unwinding after your day. I also feel like it makes guests feel welcome and comfortable. Obviously not everyone’s personal style and preferences with be in line with mine but no matter what theme or feel your going for, here are some tips I follow when putting a room together:

Keep Scale In Mind – Scale is so important to make your rooms look balanced! If your space is small, avoid bulky furniture and opt for smaller scale pieces to make your room feel less cluttered. If you have high ceilings or a large space, buy larger pieces so your room doesn’t look bare. When it comes to décor try using varying heights of items to keep it interesting!

Add Texture – Texture is a great way to add visual interest to your room. See above for some of my favourite items with varying textures including linen, moss, wicker, cork, rope and knits.

Move Things Around – Like I mentioned earlier, buy your pieces then go home and rearrange! It can be easy to get stuck and think a room is ‘finished’ but you could be missing out on a piece’s full potential. I often try pieces in every space before finally settling on a new home for my décor. Sometimes it won’t work out or feel ‘right’ but sometimes it will be amazing and I’m so glad I decided to be creative!

Incorporate Similar Colours & Patterns – This is a great tip if you’re designing your room around a specific piece that you love. For example if you found a rug or throw pillow with an amazing pattern and colour scheme, try incorporating items to tie those into your room. This will keep the look consistent even if there are a lot of different elements in your space.

Use Metallic Accents – Using metallic accents, whether its gold or my personal favourite silver, will do so much for your space! I love the elegance, shine, and interest that they add to a design. I like to tie it in throughout my home with frames, candle holders, décor items, and see above for the metallic letters!

Green Is Great – I absolutely love adding some type of greenery to each space and would suggest you do the same. I personally struggle to keep plants alive and well so I usually opt for faux plants, flowers and even fruit. Another fantastic décor item is moss balls! I have had so many people question this, but my love for them is unwavering and I promise you they will add a great element to any space. I spring for fresh flowers whenever I have company, an event, or just want something extra pretty to cheer me up!

Touches of Black – I grew up watching home design shows and reading about it, so I have picked up tips from anywhere and everywhere. One that I distinctively remember was to add at least a touch of black. Even if its just a picture frame, (or my ongoing obsession with chalkboard labels) I try to incorporate it in each space.

Add Personal Items – Nothing makes a space feel like home more than adding a touch of you and your family, friends, pets, etc. to each space. I can honestly say that I have more picture frames than I know what to do with but I try to fill each one with our favourite memories and moments. If you’re not a fan of having a ton of selfies around the house, opt for a print instead! There are so many cute ones out there to suit any personality, see below for the source of some of my favourite prints from Stephanie Sterjovski.

I hope some of my tips help you with your own space!

friday favourites: mac cosmetics

I have a lot of people ask what products I use and always have so much fun giving them beauty advice. Considering most of the products I use in my daily routine are by MAC Cosmetics, I decided to dedicate my first ever beauty post to them! I still remember getting my first beauty counter makeover at MAC back in junior high and have been a loyal customer ever since.

Here are a few of my favourite must haves that I use regularly. I usually stick to neutrals for my daily look and always seem to gravitate towards peachy-pink, bronze and orange toned hues. This look is flattering for any occasion or anyone, plus I’ve always loved a look that can go from day to night easily and this is a perfect palette for that!
